Eagle softball splits against county foes

The week wasn’t as busy for Milford softball as originally planned.

The Eagles hosted Syracuse, Centennial and Seward, but a tournament in David City Sept. 16 was canceled because of weather.

The Eagles went 2-1 in their games, beating Syracuse 14-3 and Centennial 12-0 before losing to Seward 12-0.

The team got off to a slow start against Syracuse, Coach Shelly Mowinkel said.

“It was 3-1 going into the fourth, and our bats exploded,” Mowinkel said.

Milford scored 13 in the fourth to end the game via the run rule. Izzy Yeackley hit a home run and a double and drove in four for MHS.

Ava Maple also had two hits.

The win over Centennial was a great night for the Eagles, Mowinkel said. Yeackley and Addi Mowinkel hit back-to-back home runs, and Addi Mowinkel and Maeli Kubicek both had three hits.

“We hit the ball very hard,” Coach Mowinkel said. “We played well on defense and offense.”

The game against Seward didn’t go as well, with SHS pitchers holding Milford to just three hits in the game and striking out 10 Eagles.

“We had errors at crucial times,” Coach Mowinkel said. “That is what happens when you put pressure on the bases.”

The Eagles (13-5) were to play at Crete Sept. 19 and travel to Raymond Central Thursday, Sept. 21. The Southern Nebraska Conference tournament is Saturday, Sept. 23, in Geneva. Milford is the top seed and has a first-round bye. MHS will play the winner of Blue River/Fairbury at noon.
