Dorothy G. Whitmore, age 96, of Lincoln, passed away Dec. 12, 2023, at The Waterford at Williamsburg in Lincoln.

Dorothy was born Feb. 4, 1927, on the farm south of Shelby to Herman and Elizabeth (Krumbach) Richter. She attended school at Dist. 67 (Fairview) for eight years, Victor High School for two years and graduated from Shelby High School in 1944. She then taught rural school for three years at Dist. 1 in Polk County.

On Nov. 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Raymond C. Whitmore at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby. To this union, seven children were born. They made their home on a farm two and a half miles southwest of Surprise where they lived for 42 years. After they retired they moved to Seward in 1989.

Dorothy worked in various places, including Northside Cafe in David City, A & B Lounge in Shelby and the Seward High School cafeteria. She generously volunteered her time at the Nebraska VA hospital in Lincoln and the library at Aquinas High School in David City.

She was a member of the Gresham American Legion Auxiliary for 69 years, 8 and 40 for 49 years, lifetime member of the Seward V.F.W., PCCW, St. Vincent De Paul Church in Seward.

Survivors include her children, Lonnie (Brenda) Whitmore of Lincoln, Renee (Dave) Schmid of Valparaiso, Fran (Vic) Hilger of Lincoln, and Jay Whitmore of Portland, Oregon; daughters-in-law, Deb Whitmore of Shelby and Val Whitmore of Omaha; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Doris Richter of Lincoln; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; parents, Herman and Elizabeth Richter; sons, Chris, Randall and Doug; sisters, Agnes (Hershal) Reisdorff, and Bertha (Richard) Thompson; brothers, Clarence (Verda) Richter, Leo (Agnes) Richter, Edward Richter and Lawrence Richter; in-laws, Howard and Wilma Whitmore, Lloyd Whitmore and Roberta Peterson.

The funeral service was Dec. 18 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby with interment in the Shelby Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to St. Vincent De Paul Church in Seward, Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelby, St. Peters in Lincoln or Aquinas High School in David City.
