Delbert Walter William Meyer was born Aug. 26, 1930, near Hanover, Kansas, to Martin and Elise (Klipp) Meyer.

He was received into God’s Kingdom of Grace through the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at the home of his grandparents on Aug. 31, 1930. He attended Hanover High School for one year then moved to Concordia High School in Seward, where he graduated. He then attended Concordia Teacher’s College, graduating in 1952. On June 21, 1953, Delbert and Anna Lovercamp of Alma, Missouri, also a student at Concordia Teacher’s College, were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran in Alma, Missouri. His master’s degree was obtained at Eastern Illinois University in 1955.

He had numerous calls to be teacher, elementary principal, organist and choir director. He accepted a call to St. Paul in Strasburg, Illinois, for three years, then Bethlehem Lutheran in Kennewick, Washington for seven years, Holy Cross in Seattle, Washington, for four years and finally Emmanuel Lutheran in York for 15 years. After retiring from teaching, he began a career working for Aid Association for Lutherans (now Thrivent) for 13 years, earning numerous awards each year.

After retirement, Gideon Jail Ministry at York County Jail took his energy. Delbert enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota and Western Nebraska. He loved traveling the country with Ann. Delbert always led the family in a devotion before all holiday meals. Delbert was also known for his balloon animals and enjoyed letting his grandchildren paint, do arts and crafts and build with his wood scraps. After retirement, he learned to crochet plastic bags to make sleeping mats for the needy.

Delbert fell asleep in the Lord on Feb. 7, 2024.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Meyer, of 70 years. Their son, Mike and wife Rhonda and their children, Kellen Meyer his wife Michelle, their children Kinslee, Emalyn Reese and Hayes, all of Seward. We join with the family in sadness that he has left us, but rejoice in the hope and guaranteed promise of the resurrection. There is a Christ blessed assurance that we shall live because our Jesus has promised “Because I live, you shall live also!”
