Counselor excited to build program

It’s been a fun first semester for Rochelle Geiger.

The Centennial Elementary counselor has settled in and is building a new program in the district.

“I’m very excited to work with elementary again,” she said.

Geiger has degrees from Doane University, York College and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Her first degree was in human relations. She taught preschool for six years, then moved up to second grade for three years. She also served as the principal at St. Joseph Catholic School in York.

“I have taught every grade level, including college,” she said with a smile.

She is currently finishing her school counseling degree at Doane University.

She has also worked in social work in York County, as well as diversion and other court programs. She is also passionate about suicide prevention and gives presentations around the area.

She said providing services for elementary students is important because “elementary is where the foundation is.”

Elementary is where most emotional and social learning occurs and is when people learn to control their emotions.

“The need was highlighted by Covid,” Geiger said.

She works with families who are struggling to meet basic needs and with students from elementary through high school who might be struggling with their mental health.

Geiger has already started a closet at Centennial with personal items, clothing and other things for students who might need them.

“School is the hub,” she said.

She knew Centennial was the place for her when she was interviewed for the new position.

“It was home. I just knew,” she said. “The kids were great. Everyone was so welcoming.”

Growing up in York, she knew about Centennial and the good reputation it has.

“I knew it was progressive if it was seeking elementary counselors,” she said. “Any time I can build a program it’s exciting. Building from the ground up is my passion.”

In addition to being the elementary counselor, she is also a coach for the Seward County girls’ wrestling team.

Geiger is married to Dave, the environmental director at York General Hospital. They have three married daughters, four granddaughters and four Schnauzers.

During her free time, she likes to camp, read, swim, crochet and play games with her grandkids.
