Council hears wellness center update

At its June 6 meeting, the Seward City Council:

  • heard an update on the Seward Wellness Center from City Administrator Greg Butcher. Butcher said design documents have been issued to Sampson Construction. Local childcare providers will be brought in to give input on the design of before- and after-school care and child watch areas. The Wellness Center Committee is now looking at finishes, flooring and wall colors, as well as vendors and costs for equipment and furniture. Butcher said the committee will present the project at the council’s June 20 meeting for additional feedback from the council.
  • approved construction contracts with General Excavating for the Park Avenue and Bradford Street storm sewer improvement projects. The projects will be substantially completed by July 1, 2024, but most of the work is expected to be done this calendar year, beginning in July.
  • authorized agreements for engineering services with The Schemmer Associates totaling $292,727 for the Park Avenue and Bradford Street storm sewer improvement projects.
  • authorized an agreement for design services with The Schemmer Associates in the amount of $98,278.19 for the Lindell and Jackson Avenue Reconstruction Project.
  • awarded a bid for roof replacement on 12 city buildings to White Castle Roofing for an estimated cost of $290,884 to repair damage caused by the June 14, 2022, hailstorm. The cost will be submitted as an insurance claim.
  • set a $500 license fee to operate a junk business, junk yard or iron storage facility within the city limits to coincide with existing municipal code for appropriately zoned areas.
  • made routine updates to the job description for City Engineer.
  • approved a special designated liquor license for Pivo’s Tavern LLC for an event at Harvest Hall on June 24.
