Centennial softball battles on diamond

The Centennial softball team is coming together, Coach Tori Homolka said. While the Broncos' record stands at 4-11, Homolka said she's seeing improvements.

"Things are coming together," she said. "Now we're all on the same page, we need to get together in games and score in more than one inning."

The Broncos fell 8-0 to Aurora Aug. 30. Centennial trailed 3-0 going into the seventh inning and then made some mistakes that allowed the Huskies to pull away, Homolka said.

Ellie Tempel, Rylee Menze and Libbie Kubicek each had a hit in the game, with Tempel hitting a double.

On Sept. 1, the Broncos played at Syracuse and defeated the Rockets 12-1. Ava Fischer led the offense with a 3-4 game and drove in two runs. Kobie Kosek and Tempel also had two RBIs, and Savannah Horne was 2-3 at the plate and stole four bases.

The Broncos were at Fairbury for a tournament Sept. 3 and went 0-3, battling hard against Milford but losing 4-3, losing to Fillmore Central/Exeter-Milligan/Friend 16-5 and falling to Scottsbluff 12-0 in three innings.

CHS hit four singles against Milford, one each by Tempel, Lillian Butzke, Riley Ziegler and Eliza Timmerman. Horne and Fischer had two hits each against FCEMF and Butzke drove in three runs. A single by Butzke was the only hit of the game against Scottsbluff.

"We need to work on communication," Homolka said. "We've figured out our swing, now it's the mental approach in the box."

The Broncos hosted Wilber-Clatonia and Centura/Central Valley for a triangular Sept. 6 and won both games, topping WC 4-2 and CCV 7-6. CHS will host St. Paul Thursday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. in Gresham. Its next game is Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Beaver Crossing against Milford. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
