Centennial marks good at quad

Centennial track was at Louisville March 24 for a quadrangular with Wilber-Clatonia and Plattsmouth.

“This meet seems to get cancelled most years, so it was great to get it in and actually have decent weather,” Coach Rob Johansen said.

Centennial had a handful of athletes win their events. Xavier Ettwein topped the shot put with a throw of 43-4, an all-time personal best.

“He had a little extra drive and motivation after fouling all four discus throws and really wanted to redeem himself,” Johansen said.

Jayde Gumaer finished second in the discus with a throw of 139-9, just off his all-time best.

Ettwein also jumped to third in the long jump with an 18-3 effort. Camden Winkelman added a foot to his personal best in the pole vault and finished fourth at 11-0. He also ran a personal best in the 400 of 56.53 seconds and finished third.

Johansen said the cooler temperatures helped the distance runners Friday.

“Distance runners found this to be great weather to run all-time PR’s after last year’s weather was too windy to achieve any good times,” he said.

Ella Wambold and Grace Schernikau ran personal bests in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. Clinton Turnbull and Matthew Hoops set PRs in the 1,600, as well.

“What was really impressive is that they did this in the first outdoor meet of the year and not in very good shape yet. We are really excited to see how this group improves during the year....barring 40+ mph windy meet days,” Johansen said.

John Fehlhafer took second in the 800-meter run, as well.

Both CHS boys’ relay teams (4x100 and 4x400) took second place.

Savannah Horne sprinted to the win in the 100- and 200-meter dashes for the girls. Cambria Saunders won the triple jump, and Samara Ruether topped the pole vault.

“All of them had good times and marks for this early in the season,” Johansen said.

The Broncos were scheduled to compete at Wilber-Clatonia March 28 and will next be on the track Wednesday, April 5, at Malcolm. Events at Malcolm start at 10 a.m.
