Centennial’s volleyball team was 1-1 in its two matches last week, sweeping Central City 25-14, 25-11, 25-13 Aug. 31 and falling to Milford 25-22, 22-25, 25-14, 26-24 Sept. 2.

Coach Alex Anstine said the Broncos played a clean match against Central City, making the Bison make mistakes.

“It was nice to get a consistent win,” she said. “It gave us confidence, especially to the freshmen.”

Setter Gracen Fehlhafer injured her ankle during warmups, so Kate Luebbe stepped in for her first varsity start. Anstine said she settled in well and did a good job. She was 4-5 with two assists.

Karley Naber led the offense with seven kills, and Cora Payne and Caitlynn Bargen added six each. Naber also served three aces.

After getting her ankle taped, Fehlhafer was 52-54 setting with 23 assists. Bargen picked up nine digs, and Samara Ruether added seven.

The Broncos hosted Milford Sept. 2 for a Southern Nebraska Conference and Seward County battle. The Eagles got the better of Centennial, but Anstine said CHS will have another chance at Milford Sept. 9 at the Malcolm Invitational.

The Broncos entered the match a little battered, with Bargen, Fehlhafer and Krislyn Green not at 100%. The Eagles’ height was a struggle for Centennial, Anstine said. The Broncos also made some silly mistakes.

Bargen led the team with 12 kills against Milford, and Payne added 10. Naber and Green each served two aces, and Fehlhafer notched 34 assists.

The back row was busy, with five Broncos picking up double digit digs – Fehlhafer 15, Ella Wambold 13, Naber 11, Ruether 10 and Green 10.

Centennial (3-3) swept Sandy Creek 25-20, 25-16, 25-13 Sept. 7 and will play in the Malcolm Invitational Thursday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and 11. CHS will play Milford at 5 p.m. Thursday, followed by Elmwood-Murdock. On Saturday, CHS opens against Malcolm at 9 a.m. and plays Ashland-Greenwood at 11 a.m.
