The Centennial softball team had to be flexible for its first weekend of competition. The Broncos were scheduled to host a triangular in Beaver Crossing Aug. 22, but overnight rain left the field unplayable.
So, the Broncos and their opponents – Bishop Neumann and Fillmore Central – went to Wahoo to play.
Centennial started the day with an 8-0 loss to Neumann, a very good team, Coach Holly Borchers said. Neumann pitching held CHS to just two hits, a pair of singles by Ashton Wolf.
Centennial allowed seven hits over the five innings. Lynly Leif struck out one in her four innings of work.
“I was proud of the girls. We held our own the first four innings,” Borchers said.
Centennial came back with a 7-1 win over Fillmore Central in its second game. Six players hit singles for the Broncos, and Dakota Boyer drove in two runs.
Emery Menze pitched all six innings and struck out five.
Borchers said the team struggled to get the bats going against the Panthers.
For games at the start of the season, Borchers said, she thought the team was where it needed to be.
“The girls jive well together. Every position is strong,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the season.”
Centennial (1-1) split a triangular with Fairbury (W 11-3) and North Bend (L 6-5) Aug. 24, then heads to Seward Saturday, Aug. 29, for a tournament.
