Alfred Suhr passed away April 4, 2023, at the age of 98 at Seward.

Alfred was born Oct. 24, 1924, at Seward, to Henry and Ingke (Duer) Suhr. He was baptized Nov. 15, 1924, and confirmed April 10, 1938, at Immanuel, Staplehurst. Alfred graduated from Staplehurst High School in 1940. On June 2, 1946, Alfred married Eunice Hansen. They were engaged in farming and also raised cattle and hogs. In addition, Alfred started a commercial trucking business, hauling livestock to the Omaha Stockyards and local sale barns. He also served as a volunteer fireman for the Staplehurst Fire Department for 25 years. Alfred loved sports – played baseball and softball and loved coaching (especially his sons) and umpiring youth baseball in Staplehurst.

Alfred was a faithful church member at Immanuel in Staplehurst, where he sang in the choir and later at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, where he served as an elder and on various committees. He was also an usher until well into his 90s, helped serve at funerals and helped with the food truck. He led hymns during worship at Ridgewood.

Alfred was proud of his family and loved seeing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He really enjoyed going to Spare Time for morning coffee and the news of the day. He also loved attending volleyball and basketball games at Concordia.

Alfred is survived by daughter, Carol (Dennis) Ochsner, Omaha; son, Gordon (Jennifer) Suhr, Valentine; and twin sons, Gale (Kirsten) Suhr, Elkhorn, and Gary (Melanie), Seward; grandchildren, David (Christina) Ochsner, LaVista, Sara Ochsner, Omaha, Evan Suhr, Valentine, Jarod Suhr, United States Air Force, Ryan Suhr, Omaha, Christian Suhr, Plainview, Adelynn Suhr, Elkhorn, Jake (Becky) Suhr, Seward, and Molly Suhr, Lincoln; great-grandchildren, James and Thomas Ochsner, LaVista, and Kyah Suhr, Seward; very special friend, Dorothy Wegner; sister-in-law, Marjorie Hansen; and nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice, on Jan. 1, 2013; his parents; mother-in-law, Irene Hansen; sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Edward Schlager; Twila and Fred Greckel; and brother-in-law, Wayne Hansen.

The funeral service was April 11 at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward with committal at the Seward Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. John Lutheran Church. Arrangements by Volzke Funeral Home.
