Alan G. Ehlers of Madison was born Dec. 25, 1968, to Gary and Linda (Obermier) Ehlers in Omaha. He graduated from Centennial High School in Utica in 1987.

On Nov. 25, 1989, Alan was united in marriage to Denise Naber at St. John Lutheran Church in Waco. Alan attended York College, graduating in 1996 and earning his bachelor’s degree in education. He then graduated from Doane College in 2002, earning his master’s degree, and the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 2006, earning his specialist degree.

Alan began his career as a teacher and coach. He later became a principal and then finally a superintendent. Alan was the current superintendent for Madison Public Schools as well as the chair of Midtown Health Board. He held various board positions throughout the communities where he lived including on the Chamber of Commerce, TeamMates, Park Boards and many others.

He was the Madison Chamber Citizen of the Year in 2016. He was always willing to volunteer his time to whomever needed it. Alan’s family meant the world to him and he loved spending time working on his small farm putting up hay with the kids. The past few years were very special with the addition of grandchildren. 

Alan passed away Sept. 27, 2022, in Norfolk at the age of 53 years, 9 months and 2 days.

He is survived by his wife, Denise Ehlers of Madison; sons, Jonathan (Krista) Ehlers of Gretna, Barry (Cali) Ehlers of Omaha and Eric Ehlers of Manhattan, Kansas; daughter, Jordan Ehlers of Kearney; grandchildren, Lakely, Bo and Brooks Ehlers; father, Gary Ehlers of Utica; sister, Sharon (Kelly) Hartshorn of Utica; nieces, nephews and other family, Cindy, Jodi, Tom, Kelly and Kris.   

A funeral service was Oct. 3 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Utica, followed by interment in the Utica Cemetery. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ehlers family for future designations. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.volzkefuneralhome.com.
