Seward’s Girl Scout Troop 20622 wants to extend a big “thank you” to all the generous people in Seward who donated boxes of cookies to go to healthcare heroes in the community.
The troop, made up of 15 girls from kindergarten to fifth grade, collected 90 boxes for donation.
Whenever someone orders Girl Scout cookies, there is an option to order boxes that the girls will donate to a cause of their choice. Every year, the Girl Scouts vote on who the donated cookies will go to.
This year, they chose healthcare workers.
Troop co-leader Alison Kumbier said she believes the children chose healthcare workers because they recognize that healthcare workers do a lot to keep everyone healthy and safe.
“If we give them the cookies, then they have a little treat when they're maybe not feeling so well, or if they just need a treat or a pick up,” said Agatha, a member of Troop 20622 and the daughter of Kumbier.
The troop sold cookies door-to-door and at booths. If people saw the booths and wanted to donate change, the girls put that change toward purchasing more donated boxes.
“It’s nice having people see the troop doing helpful things for the community, because one of the main pillars for our kids is to be actively involved in the community and help others,” Kumbier said.
Kumbier stored all the Girl Scout cookies in her home, so she and Agatha delivered the donated cookies together on April 1. They distributed the boxes among the local hospital, clinic, urgent care, pharmacies, animal hospital, dental clinics and Seward Vision Clinic.
“None of them were expecting it, which was a nice surprise for them,” Kumbier said. “They were just really grateful, and they all said that they were very excited because they love cookies.”
Agatha said the boxes were heavy but she had fun.
“They were really excited to get the cookies,” she said.
Kumbier said she enjoyed seeing the excitement on people’s faces and appreciates everyone’s support of the Girl Scouts.
“I think Seward as a whole is just a very generous community,” Kumbier said. “They recognize the community helpers, and they always want to support and help where they can, the same way that they supported the troop by purchasing cookies for their finances as well.”
