Lucy Bird Honig was born Feb. 20, 1936, to Alzie and Lucy E. (Harris) Schanefelt in McFarland, Kansas. She attended Pampa Elementary School in Pampa, Texas, and graduated from Alma High School in Alma, Kansas, in 1954. She then attended a short training program at Concordia Teachers College and began teaching in a one-room school house in Hope, Kansas, where she met her future husband.

On June 24, 1956, Lucy was united in marriage to Martin L. Honig in Harrington, Kansas. They then both taught school in Sidney. She then commuted to night classes at Northern Colorado University and received her associate’s degree. Lucy was a teacher for most of her life. She taught in Hope, Kansas, and Sidney and Bridgeport in Nebraska. She went back to school and received her bachelor’s degree from Concordia in 1984, graduating with her daughter, Vicki. She then taught in Vernon Center, Minnesota, and at Grace Lutheran School in Chicago, Illinois.

Lucy also worked at the Milford library as a librarian for four years. She then worked in child care as a teacher at Memorial Hospital for three years. In her free time, she enjoyed sewing, especially Barbie doll clothes. She loved to read and was known to read five different books at once in five different rooms of the house, keeping all of them straight. Lucy moved into the Ridgewood Care Center Alzheimer’s Unit in 2012 and lived there for the past seven years.

Lucy passed away Sept. 30, 2019, in Seward at the age of 83 years, 7 months and 10 days.

She is survived by her son, James (Sheryl) Honig of Ellison Bay, Wisconsin; daughters, Vicki (Rod) Woebbecke of Seward, Valerie (Len) Mikles of Columbus, Ohio, and Virginia “Ginny” Gray (Jim) of Minneapolis, Minnesota; grandchildren, Chris (Liz) Honig, Tim Honig (Stacy), Stephanie Woebbecke, Gretchen (Travis) Pollak, Ethan Mikles, Laurel Mikles, Keith Gray, Jadzia Gray and Morgan Gray; great-grandchildren, Hanah Honig and Logan Pollak; and sister-in-law, Prissy Schanefelt of Gallup, New Mexico.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, Alzie and Lucy Schanefelt; brothers, Porter H. Brooks and wife, Norma of Vienna, Virginia, and Perry Schanefelt of Gallup, New Mexico; and great granddaughter, Eliana Honig.

A remembrance book will be available for signing from 1 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward. The family will greet friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A service will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18, at St. John Lutheran Church in Seward, with the Rev. Andy Schermbeck officiating. Inurnment will be at Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery East in Seward. Memorial contributions may be made to the Honig family for future designation.
