Work begins to improve railroad crossing

Seward city crews are working to improve the railroad crossing on Highway 34 in town.

Mel Aldrich, street/transportation superintendent, said at the city council’s Sept. 4 meeting that the city is milling down the bumpy crossing. Work began the morning of Sept. 5.

The city has been discussing the railroad crossing with the Nebraska Department of Transportation and BNSF. The railroad tracks sit below the highway, causing a bump. The city previously added a road sign, warning drivers of the rough crossing.

Aldrich said the city will only work on one lane at a time, so the rest of the highway is open.

“Right now, this is kind of a band-aid fix,” Aldrich said, “but it’s going to be an improvement.”

Aldrich added that BNSF is also providing manpower for the milling project, and the railroad is working with NDOT for a more long-term fix.
