The Nebraska National Guard Museum will host “Nebraskans in the Civil War” on Saturday, April 6, at 1 p.m. in the Jones Bank Theater.
The presentation will focus on the members of the territory who formed an infantry regiment and cavalry squadrons during the war. This will also include forces that protected settlers during the war. The event will also feature members of the First Nebraska Infantry Regiment (re-enactors) that will be on-hand to talk with patrons after the presentation.
One of the most critical battles of the Civil War was at Fort Donelson, Tennessee, in February, 1862. Members of the First Nebraska Infantry Regiment stood their ground on Wynn’s Ferry Road and denied the Confederates a chance to escape the fort.
The Rebels surrendered to an unknown Union general by the name of Ulysses S. Grant. He became a national hero after the battle. His nickname became “Unconditional Surrender” after the battle. He went on to fame in 1864 as the overall commander of the Union forces and the man who led the North to victory in 1865. He became president several years after the war. The stand of the First Nebraska changed the trajectory of the war and the country.
