The Seward girls’ basketball team will have a new head coach for the 2013-14 season.

Tom Tvrdy resigned from the position as of March 19. He was the girls’ head coach for 12 years. He will continue to teach social studies at Seward High.

Over the past five years, the Bluejays compiled a 124-5 record that included a 104-game winning streak. The Jays also won four consecutive Class B state championships during his tenure.

“I have decided that it is best for my family to resign from the position of head girls’ basketball coach at Seward High School,” he said. “Next year I will have all three of my children playing on different basketball teams. I had to decide between traveling with my wife and watching our kids play or to continue coaching.”

Son Titus is a member of the Doane College men’s basketball team. Daughter Hannah will be a freshman at UNL next season and will play for the Husker basketball team. Son Carson is a fourth grader and plays on the Silverhawks club team.

“For the next four years, my plan is to watch my kids play and help coach my son’s Silverhawks club team,” Tvrdy said. “God willing, my goal is to get back into coaching when my family situation allows me to do it.”

Among the honors Tvrdy has won during his time in Seward are:

- Huskerland Prep Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year in 2008-09 and 2009-10

- Lincoln Journal Star High School Girls’ Coach of the Year, 2011

- Nebraska Coaches Association Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year, 2011-12

The 2011-12 Bluejay finished the season ranked No. 29 in the country by ESPN Hoop Gurlz.

“There are too many people out there to thank from players, coaches, administration and community members that I fear I will leave someone out.  But, my sincere thanks go out to all who made this great experience possible for me these past 12 years,” Tvrdy said. “Without the support of my wife Shelly and long time assistant coach Greg Miller, none of this would have been possible for me to be a part of.”

Steve Borer, Seward High activities director, on behalf of Seward High School, offered congratulations and thanks to Tvrdy on March 20.

“His leadership of the girls’ basketball program has been excellent,” Borer said.

At this time, the school has not announced Tvrdy’s replacement.
