Virgil Gene Lunney was born June 10, 1947, to Virgil L. and Hilda (Hering) Lunney in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He attended Zion Lutheran School in Garland from kindergarten through eighth grade. He then attended Garland High School, graduating in 1966. Gene served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Conflict and was stationed in Germany.

On July 18, 1970, Gene was united in marriage to Yvonne Bek at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Staplehurst. He was employed at Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company as a laborer for 33 years, retiring in 2002. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping and traveling. His special joy was attending and supporting his grandchildren in their activities and spending time with them.

Gene was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Garland and over the years served as elder, trustee and financial secretary. He was a member of the Garland Fire Department for 40 years and served on the Village of Garland board for six years.

Gene passed away Oct. 26, 2019, in Garland at the age of 72 years, 4 months and 16 days.

He is survived by his wife, Yvonne Lunney of Garland; daughters, Gena (Dan) Brecka of Dwight and Yvette (Andy) Mentink of Stromsburg; brother, Terry Lunney of Garland; sisters, Linda Svoboda of Lincoln and Deb (Chip) Aegerter of Seward; and grandchildren, Jacy Mentink, Brayden Brecka and Koy Mentink.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Hilda Lunney; son, Mark Lunney; and brother-in-law, Dan Svoboda.

A service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019, at Zion Lutheran Church, 370 Fourth Street in Garland, with the Rev. David Dobbertien officiating. Casketbearers are Kim Brown, Tracy Poppe, Nathan Svoboda, Chase Aegerter, Paige Wood and Chuck Haase. Interment with full military honors by the Garland American Legion Post 369 will be in the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Garland.
