The throwers led the way for the Centennial track team April 18 in its home invitational.

Alex Galavez and Cora Hoffschneider were first and second in the girls’ shot put with throws of 35-7.5 and 35-3.5, respectively.

“That provided big points helping the girls team to win the meet,” Coach Rob Johansen said. “It was a big jump of improvement for both of them, so we hope that continues for them.”

Samara Ruether tied her personal best in the pole vault at 9-6 to win the event. She vaulted 9-6 at state in 2022. Cambria Saunders won the triple jump with a jump of 33-5.5.

Savannah Horne stayed unbeaten in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, winning in 12.36 and 26.28 seconds. Johansen said the 4x100-meter relay ran a season-best 53.5 seconds and did a good job with the handoffs.

In the boys’ competition, the throwers carried the team, Johansen said. All three placed in both the shot put and discus. Jayde Gumaer led the discus crew, finishing second at 146-10. Xavier Ettwein had the best Bronco shot put at 47-2.5

Camden Winkelmen improved by a foot in the pole vault, placing third at 12-0.

“Coach (Carson) Farr thinks he will be at 13-0 by the end of the season,” Johansen said.

Lane Zimmer is recovering from an injury and still finished second in the long jump at 19-6.5.

“He did excellent on limited practices the past week,” Johansen said.

The Broncos competed in a quadrangular at Heartland April 24 and will be at Thayer Central Saturday, April 29, for the Southern Nebraska Conference meet.
