It took until the last week of the year before the Seward girls won their first game of the season.

The Jays defeated Bishop Neumann 46-40 in the Wahoo tournament Dec. 30 after falling to Wahoo 43-28 in the opener Dec. 28.

“It helps when you make threes in the first half,” SHS Coach Beth Bohuslavsky said.

She said she saw a difference in the team’s mindset coming into Thursday’s game.

“Everything clicked,” she said, adding that the team showed more energy. “It was good to see the offense click.”

Hannah Benedict finished with a career-high 17 points and was 5-10 from three-point range. Anna Hughes grabbed nine rebounds for the Jays.

In the loss to Wahoo, Bohuslavsky said, Seward didn’t play badly; it just didn’t hit shots. SHS was 9-45 shooting, including 4-25 from three.

Despite that, Seward cut the Wahoo lead to seven midway through the fourth quarter.

Abbey Ringler led the team with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

The Jays (1-8) have one game on the schedule this week – a road trip to Beatrice Friday, Jan. 8.

“It’ll be a tough game for us,” Bohuslavsky said.

She said Beatrice graduated a couple starters but returned a couple guards who play well together.
