The Seward girls’ soccer team went 1-1 in its games last week, losing to Conestoga 2-1 April 5 and beating Schuyler 4-2 April 9.

Coach Nick Holmes said the Conestoga game featured two evenly matched teams. Seward’s goal came from Jordyn Collins off an assist from Claire Geidel.

He said the Jays were not happy with how they played.

“We never got going,” he said.

Seward was supposed to play Schuyler April 7, but poor weather conditions encouraged officials to move the game to Saturday.

Schuyler got on the board first on a mistake by the Seward goalkeeper. The Jays answered on their next possession. Ellie Sagehorn dribbled down the field, crossed to Avery Briggs whose shot was blocked. Aly Conde put the ricochet into the net.

In the second half, the Jays scored off a corner kick from Ava Fischer to Jayden Fernau, who headed the ball into the goal.

Fischer later scored on another corner kick for a 3-1 Seward lead. The final Bluejay goal came on a Collins to Sagehorn ricochet.

Schuyler’s last goal was a shot that seemed to stay in the air forever, Holmes said, and ended up going over the goalkeeper’s head.

Seward (4-5) is the No. 4 seed in the Central Conference tournament that started April 4. The Jays hosted Lakeview April 12 and lost 1-0 in a game that was interrupted by lightning and a tornado warning.
