SHS baseball splits first games

The Seward baseball team started its season going 2-2 in the first week. The Jays lost to Norris 12-2 March 20, beat Raymond Central 13-2 March 21, lost to Wahoo 16-2 March 23 and defeated St. Paul 19-0 March 25.

SHS recorded six hits in the loss to Norris, including doubles by Reggie Sukup and Cam Olson. Ryley Hain and Braiden Herring drove in the two runs for the Jays.

Finn Hochstein took the loss on the mound, striking out four in three innings and allowing five runs.

The Jays scored 10 runs in the fifth inning against Raymond Central to end the game via the 10-run rule. Hochstein was 2-2 with a home run and two RBIs. Connor Sveeggen was 2-3 with a double, and Carl Taylor also hit a double and drove in two.

Kolton Loos pitched four innings for SHS.

The Seward offense couldn’t get going against Wahoo/Bishop Neumann/Lincoln Lutheran. SHS finished with seven hits, all singles. Sukup was 2-3 to lead the team.

Sveeggen allowed nine runs in 3 1/3 innings and struck out three.

Seward batters pounded 18 hits in the win over St. Paul/Palmer. Sukup was 5-5 with a double. Hain was 3-5, and Taylor was 3-3 with a triple and five RBIs.

Hochstein went 2-6 with a double and a home run and drove in three. Loos also doubled, and Brycen Burt drove in three.

Burt was the winning pitcher, as well, striking out four in the game.

The Jays (2-2) were to play at Beatrice March 27 and at Platte Valley in Yutan March 28. The Jays are back home Thursday, March 30, to host Platteview at 4:30 p.m. and are scheduled to host Omaha Skutt Saturday, April 1, at noon.

The team heads to Nebraska City Monday, April 3, and hosts Hastings Tuesday, April 4, at 4:30 p.m.
