Seward shuts down Gering for homecoming win

Homecoming week is usually full of activities and distractions for high school athletes. But the Seward football team kept its focus Sept. 23 and dominated Gering 42-7.

Seward finished with 371 total yards and held the Bulldogs to 145. The Jays picked up 25 first downs to Gering’s 10.

“The kids did a great job,” Coach Jamie Opfer said. “We had some penalties early on, but we overcame those and were able to enjoy a good homecoming victory.”

He said scoring early in the game helped give SHS confidence.

Seward’s first touchdown was a 3-yard run by Kalen Knott, the first of three rushing touchdowns for the senior quarterback.

On Gering’s next possession, Luke Wegman intercepted a Bulldog pass and raced to the endzone for a pick-six.

“The defense has been playing phenomenal,” Opfer said.

In addition to Knott’s rushing touchdowns, he also completed TD passes to Tresten Hass and Micah Hackbart. Knott finished the game with 140 passing yards and 84 rushing.

Nolan Hill carried 25 times for 146 yards and kicked all six extra points.

Seward (4-1) was supposed to play at Lincoln Northwest Sept. 30, but the Falcons canceled the rest of their season. Next up for the Jays is York on Friday, Oct. 7.
