Seward season ends in subdistrict semifinal

The Seward girls’ soccer team opened postseason play May 1 with a 3-0 win over Crete.

“We fought really hard,” Coach Nick Holmes said.

Seward had two players out for concussion protocol after injuries in April 27’s game.

The week started with a 3-2 win over York April 26. Seward led 3-0 but then allowed two York scores late in the second half, Holmes said.

“That made it too close,” he said.

The Jays were at Lakeview April 27 and lost 3-0. In the second half, Ellie Sagehorn got tackled and hit her head, leaving her with a concussion. Later in the half, goalkeeper Jayden Fernau got tangled up with a teammate and took a knee to the head, sending her to the sideline with a concussion.

Holmes said the Jays had chances to score against the Vikings but didn’t take them.

“We played better than they,” he said. “If we score, the game changes.”

The regular season ended April 29 at home against Northwest with a 3-1 loss. Holmes said the Jays conceded a goal but then were able to score the equalizer.

“We got caught on a break in the second half,” Holmes said, “and we couldn’t close it out.”

The win over Crete pushed Seward’s record to 5-11 on the season. It also put the Jays in the district semifinal against Norris May 3. The Titans were too much for the Jays, winning the game 10-0.

Holmes said the wind was a factor and Norris was really good.

"This is the best Norris team, the best Class B team I've ever seen," he said. "I'm happy with our effort. We have improved a bunch throughout the season."

Seward had no seniors on this year's roster.
