The Seward girls’ basketball team earned third place in the Wahoo Holiday Tournament Dec. 28 and 29.

The Bluejays lost their opener to Wahoo 48-31.

“They are a scary team,” Coach Beth Bohuslavsky said.

Because of scheduling issues, Wahoo hadn’t played a game since Dec. 9. Bohuslavsky said the Bluejays played hard but got off to a rough start, trailing 17-8 after the first quarter.

The coach said Wahoo’s trap press caused trouble for the SHS ball handlers.

“Once we settled in, we played pretty well,” Bohuslavsky said.

The Jays cut the Warrior lead to two but couldn’t finish at the rim, she said. Late turnovers didn’t help, either.

Kelsey Miller led the team with nine points, and Haylie Sloup scored eight. Karlee Baack grabbed six rebounds, and Eden Schulz dished out four assists.

The loss put the Jays in the tournament’s third place game Dec. 29. SHS played Bishop Neumann and won 45-43.

“You never know who you will respond to a loss where you got slapped in the face,” Bohuslavsky said.

The Jays responded well, outscoring Bishop Neumann 18-4 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Cavaliers switched to a 1-3-1 defense, and that caused problems for the SHS offense, the coach said. In the fourth quarter, BNHS hit some shots, but the Jays held off the rally.

Overall, the team played well and had some other players step up, Bohuslavsky said. Amara Siebert led the Jays with 10 points, six rebounds, three assists and five steals.

Seward (4-5) will play at Beatrice Thursday, Jan. 5. Bohuslavsky said the team will work on its execution and fundamentals.
