Seward finishes softball season at state tournament

Once you’ve qualified for the state tournament, the next goal is to win a game or two there.

Seward’s softball team came up short of that goal Oct. 14 and 15 at state softball. The Jays lost to Northwest 8-7 and to Elkhorn 5-0 to end the season with a 24-10 record.

“I’m proud of the season,” Coach Rich Eber said. “It was a fun season. The girls did a great job.”

The opener against Northwest went back and forth before the Vikings pulled out the win. Grace Hamling led the offense with a 3-4 game, hitting a triple and a home run and driving in four. Sydney Parra was 2-3. Parra also took the loss, pitching all six innings for SHS.

Game two saw Elkhorn stymie the Bluejay offense, holding SHS to two hits, both singles by Parra.

“It was a tough way to go,” Eber said.

The team will graduate two seniors – Parra and Hamling, both of whom have decided to play softball in college. Hamling has committed to South Dakota and Parra to William Jewell.
