The Centennial cross country team saw some new competition at Milford Sept. 12, running against the Eagles for the first time this season.
Camden Winkelman was Centennial’s top runner in the boys’ race, finishing 15th in 18:48.
“Camden cut off about 40 seconds from last year and was able to pick up a medal,” Coach Rob Johansen said. “Matthew Hoops finished 22nd and Carter Fritz in 23rd. Both Matthew and Carter said their legs were still sore from a tough speedwork day on Tuesday and not quite bounced back.”
In the girls’ race, Centennial senior Grace Schernikau finished third with a time of 21:46.3.
“Grace is running good at this point in the season,” Johansen said. “She is slightly ahead of last season’s times in practices and meets, so I’m very hopeful of a season even better than last year.”
Marley Olson placed sixth for the Broncos in 22:38.9, and Josie Butzke was 11th in 23:51.4. Johansen said Butzke is recovering from last season’s injuries and is getting stronger each week.
Centennial will run at the Fillmore Central Invite in Geneva Thursday, Sept. 19. Races start with junior high at 4:15 p.m., with the varsity girls, varsity boys, JV girls and JV boys to follow.
