Santa and his elves need help

The power is out at the North Pole, and Santa Claus and his elves need your help.

That’s the premise for the North Pole Adventure at Seward Memorial Library over the Christmas break.

Jacquelyn Schranz put the adventure, modeled after the Choose-Your-Own-Adventure books, together. She said she wanted to do something other than an escape room for library patrons this Christmas.

I wanted to do a live version of choose-your-own-adventure,” she said.

Schranz wrote the script, which takes visitors through a variety of activities to help restore power at the North Pole. Only one group of from two to eight people can go on the adventure at a time, she said. Each trip takes about an hour.

Each of the potential paths has the same number of games, ranging from decorating a tree to the Snowball Olympics.

The story has two potential solutions but multiple paths to reach the finale.

It will be fun to see how each story is different,” Schranz said.

One of the challenges in putting the adventure together was finding spaces in the library big enough and not used regularly. Each activity is contained to one area or room.

Schranz said the script and activities just fell into place.

Most of the games are quiet – it is in a library, after all. But Schranz included the Snowball Olympics for the more active participants.

I wanted to designed it so there are games everyone can try,” she said.

She created a training video for the rest of the staff who will help lead groups through the adventure and help reset the games when a group is finished.

The adventure started Dec. 21, with three time slots each day through Jan. 4. Those interested in participating should either call the library at (402) 643-3318 or stop in.
