Officials stay fluid on plans for fall classes

While things could change before school is supposed to start in August, the Seward School Board is considering how that might look.

Dr. Josh Fields, district superintendent, said the board spent time during its June 8 study session talking about “how to be reasonable but safe for our students and staff and what the start of school could look like.”

Fields said the board has developed plans, but added that things change very quickly with directed health measures related to COVID-19.

The district’s plan will be approved by the Four Corners Health District, as well, he said.

Seward still plans to open for students Thursday, Aug. 13. Fields did not know about practice schedules for fall sports, which usually start the week before school.

“The challenge is to hit a moving target,” he said. “We have to be prepared for what may come and make adjustments to our plans often.”

He encouraged parents, students and district patrons to be flexible and patient, since guidelines change quite often.

In another matter, the board reviewed year one of five of the strategic plan. Dr. Matt Dominy reviewed the five strategies the district has adopted and updated progress on each.

The district’s summer construction projects are making progress, Fields said.

In other business, the district is planning an in-person graduation on Saturday, Aug. 1, at 10 a.m.

The next meeting will be in person Monday, July 13. Fields said policy updates are on the agenda, with budget discussion to begin in August.
