Milford mayor Glanzer resigns

The City of Milford is under new leadership as of Nov. 12.

Milford’s former mayor, Nick Glanzer, resigned at the city council’s Nov. 6 meeting.

In the letter of resignation Glanzer read to the council, he said his family is moving outside of the Milford city limits, which makes him ineligible to hold the office.

“It’s been a fun two years,” he said.

His resignation was effective Nov. 9.

Patrick Kelley, who was president of the council and served Ward 2 the last two years, has moved into the mayor’s role in accordance with state law.

Kelley will serve the last two years of Glanzer’s four-year term. He was sworn in at City Hall the morning of Nov. 12.

City Clerk Jeanne Hoggins said the League of Nebraska Municipalities said the council has 28 days to fill the Ward 2 vacancy created by Kelley moving to mayor.

“Patrick has to submit a name to the board to fill the Ward 2 position,” Hoggins said. “We have to, by law, have a name to present at that December meeting.”

Once a name is presented, the remaining three council members will vote on the new person.

“If in favor of it, if they’re (that person is) present, they can be sworn in and participate in the December meeting,” Hoggins said.

If the council votes against that person, Kelley will have to again present a name for consideration.

Anyone living in Ward 2 may apply to fill the council position. Applications may be obtained from City Hall inside the Webermeier Building and must be returned before the Dec. 4 meeting.

Both Kelley and the new council representative will finish terms through 2020.

They may then run for election for their own four-year terms, if they choose.

Hoggins said in her time as clerk, the council has had to fill council vacancies before, but not the mayor’s spot.

Once a new Ward 2 representative is approved, the council will have four new faces around its meeting table.

Council members Dan Kral (Ward 1) and Jeff Baker (Ward 2) finished their terms at the end of November. Neither ran for re-election.

Kelly Heser will fill the Ward 1 vacancy per the results of the Nov. 6 General Election. Tony DeLong will fill the Ward 2 spot after winning as a write-in.

Krista Carlson, the city’s attorney, attended her final Milford City Council meeting on Nov. 6. She told the council she is leaving her current law firm, Wolfe Snowden, to begin her own practice.

Justin Sheldon, an associate attorney with Wolfe Snowden, will take Carlson’s place serving Milford.

Sheldon joined the firm in August after receiving his juris doctorate from the University of Nebraska College of Law.
