For the second time in four years, Plum Creek Literacy Festival held at Concordia University has been canceled.
“We understand that the Plum Creek Literacy Festival is a beloved, much-anticipated annual event at Concordia University, Nebraska,” Emily Witt, associate vice president of marketing and communications, said. “As with every event at the university, many factors go into planning events like these. There are many scheduling, financial and other factors to consider.”
Witt said they realized some unexpected logistical concerns made it impossible to go on with the event this year.
“This was a difficult decision, and one that was not made lightly,” she said. “At this time, we intend to continue hosting literacy events for the community in future years.”
Witt said the cancellation of the event has been made aware to authors and presenters at the event and anyone who paid for the event will be given a full refund. The cancellation includes all events tied to the event, including the pre-sale book sale and the art gallery talk. The special exhibit, “Good Company: Original Children’s Book Artwork,” is still on display.
Witt said most authors and presenters were disappointed at the cancellation of the event.
“Many have shared disappointment and sadness that the festival is canceled this year,” she said. “Multiple presenters have reiterated their support for the event overall and have expressed their desire for the event to continue in the future.”
Witt also said some books had already come in for the festival. While some books will be sent back, others will either be retained to be used for future festivals or be used to benefit local children and the community.
“We are still working out these details,” Witt said. “Those who prepaid for any books will be fully refunded.”
