The Seward soccer teams opened their seasons March 16 at Norris. The girls lost 1-0 on a last-second goal.

“It was a good close game,” Coach Greg Miller said. “We were looking to take a step with a win. We’ve gotten closer to them each year. I saw a lot of positive things.”

The Jays had a chance on a free kick by Ellie Sagehorn. The Norris goalie punched the ball into the air, the the Jays thought it hit the crossbar. Ember Penas was in position and headed the ball into the goal.

The officials, however, ruled that the ball had hit the goal post.

“It’s a game of inches, a game of seconds,” Miller said.

The game’s only goal slipped between goalkeeper Camryn Opfer and the post as time expired.

“It was a stunner,” Miller said.

Looking at the state, the Bluejays took nine shots on goal, while Norris had 11. Opfer finished with 11 saves.

“It was a very even game,” Miller said.

The girls were to host Auburn and Waverly Thursday, March 21, and Saturday, March 23.
