Jays stay close but end short

Seward’s girls’ basketball team faced tough competition last week in Lincoln Christian and Grand Island Northwest.

The Jays battled hard, Coach Beth Bohuslavsky said, but came up short to the Crusaders 57-47 Dec. 8 and to Northwest 58-40 Dec. 12.

Bohuslavsky said she said good things from the Jays at Lincoln Christian. Tarryn Hartman scored a career-high 17 points, making three from beyond the arc.

“In the second half she took over and gave us a big spark,” Bohuslavsky said.

Eden Schulz also provided a spark off the bench with seven points, the coach said.

Seward cut the LCHS lead to four with about four minutes left but couldn’t get enough stops to pull out the win.

Abbey Ringler finished with five points and eight rebounds, and Hannah Benedict dished out five assists.

On Saturday, Northwest had one of its best shooting games of the season, Bohuslavsky said. GINW was 20-43 shooting in the Vikings’ win.

The Jays stayed with GINW until the fourth quarter, when the Vikings were able to pull away.

Benedict led the team with 10 points and four assists. Ringler added seven points and five boards.

“We had good looks, but they didn’t fall,” Bohuslavsky said.

The Jays (0-5) also lost to Elkhorn North 71-32 Dec. 15 and were to travel to Norris Friday, Dec. 18.
