Game one, win one for the Seward Bluejay football team.
The Jays hosted Lexington Aug. 27 in the season opener and shut out the Minutemen 38-0.
“I was really happy with our performance,” Coach Jamie Opfer said. “We got the win and a lot of kids got to play.”
SHS scored in every quarter, including a safety in the second period and a field goal in the fourth. Gavin Sukup threw for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead the Jays.
“The passing game looked good,” Opfer said. “Defensively we’ve got a lot of new guys with not a lot of varsity snaps. We have a lot of room for improvement.”
Micah Hackbart, Bryce Piskorski, Cash Duncan and Christian Fields each caught a touchdown pass.
Sukup was the team’s leading rusher, gaining 88 yards on 12 carries. He completed 20 of 26 passes for 281 yards.
Seward (1-0) is on the road Friday, Sept. 3, at Omaha Gross Catholic. The Cougars are a big, physical team, Opfer said, and can both run and pass.
“They are fast and play hard,” he said. “We have a lot to prepare for.”
