Jays fall on buzzer beater

Buzzer beaters are great when they go your way and heartbreakers when they don’t.

The Seward boys’ basketball team had a heartbreaker handed to them Dec. 22 when Lincoln Lutheran made a three-pointer at the buzzer to pull out a 53-50 victory.

Drew Covalt tied the game at 50-50 with a three-pointer with eight seconds left. Lincoln Lutheran’s game-winner was in the air when the horn sounded.

Covalt finished the game with 15 points and was 3-7 from three. Traetyn Schaefer led the Jays with 17 points and was 3-5 from beyond the arc.

“We are practicing better and as a result, we are playing better,” Coach Trevor Menke said. “It’s been a grind with our schedule before Christmas here and that’s OK. We aren’t afraid of work and just have to continue to focus on the process.”

The Jays (0-6) were to compete in the Wahoo holiday tournament Dec. 28 and 29. They lost to Wahoo 82-47 Dec. 28.
