The Seward boys’ basketball team played a pair of Tigers last week and lost to both, falling to Hastings 50-38 Dec. 3 and to North Bend Central 69-55 Dec. 5.

Coach Trevor Menke said Seward made shots and had good energy early against Hastings but couldn’t keep the momentum going. Hastings put together a run to end the third quarter that gave them a comfortable lead.

“We did a good job competing. We did a good job not giving up,” Menke said. “We took a lot of good from this game.”

The Bluejay defense was able to limit North Bend’s Jackson Wietfield early in Saturday’s game, but the senior was able to get loose in the second half and help the Tigers pull away.

Menke was pleased with Seward’s offensive rebounding against NB but said there are still some loose ends to tie up.

“It’s been a group effort,” he said. “Everyone is contributing at practice. The kids have rallied together.”

Seward (0-2) are scheduled to visit Lincoln Christian Dec. 15 and host Northwest Saturday, Dec. 12, at 4 p.m.

Lincoln Christian returns a core of seniors from last year’s team, and Northwest is coming off a good football season. The Vikings are one of the top teams in the Central Conference, Menke said.
