Jays down Vikings in OT

“We knew we would have to play well,” Coach Beth Bohuslavsky said.

With top-10 Waverly on the schedule, the Jays had to cover good shooters, a good post and a balanced offense.

Seward was able to do that in an overtime win over the Vikings 55-52 Jan. 14.

“We followed our game plan. We were able to execute our offense and on defense trail screens,” Bohuslavsky said.

One of the keys was the three-point game, she said. Seward made six from long range. Waverly connected on just two.

Seward had chances to win in regulation but didn’t make free throws down the stretch, Bohuslavsky said.

“We showed a lot of resilience,” she said.

Waverly took the lead late in the fourth quarter and threw on a full-court press. Seward broke it easily and scored a wide-open layup.

“That was good to see. We’re learning how to win,” Bohuslavsky said.

Seward got 16 points from Haylie Sloup, who was 5-9 from three-point range. Kelsey Miller scored 11 points.

Bohuslavsky said Keira Lliteras and Karlee Baack played dominant defense in the overtime period.

The Jays started the week with a 73-12 win over Schuyler Jan. 10. Seward made 10 three-pointers in the game, led by Ona Stutzman’s 4-6 performance. She scored 12 to lead Seward. Lovely Hibbert came off the bench to score 10. Miller notched seven rebounds.

The Jays (6-6) defeated Crete 52-40 Jan. 17 and will host Aurora Friday, Jan. 20, for senior night.
