A back-and-forth game finished in disappointing fashion for the Seward football team.

The Jays hosted Northwest Oct. 2 and hung with the Vikings through three quarters. GINW was able to score in the fourth and kept the Jays out of the endzone to make the final 24-17.

“I like our effort and intensity,” SHS Coach Jamie Opfer said.

Northwest scored first, but the Jays came back with a Parker Hammond field goal to end the first quarter 7-3.

Gavin Sukup found Mason Bisbee for a 15-yard scoring strike in the second quarter, giving the Jays the lead. GINW tied the score with a field goal of its own, and the teams were knotted at 10-10 at halftime.

GINW scored first in the third quarter, but Seward came back with a 19-yard pass from Sukup to Nathan Pence to tie the score again.

“They made more plays,” Opfer said. “We played hard. We got better with our assignments, but we can’t give up free points.”

He said Seward is getting closer to its potential.

“Every day is an opportunity,” he said.

Sukup finished the game completing 20 of 38 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 70 yards on 15 carries.

On defense, Sukup notched nine solo tackles. Kalen Knott added six solo tackles and three assists.

The Jays (2-4) are scheduled to play at Beatrice (2-4) Friday, Oct. 9. Opfer said the Orangemen are big up front and athletic on the perimeter.

“If we do our part, we can compete with them and win,” he said.
