The 2022 state track meet was a good one for Centennial’s Savannah Horne.

The sophomore improved her places from last year and won two medals, placing fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.61 prelim/12.78 final) and sixth in the 200-meter dash (26.26 prelim/26.79 final).

“She did not have a very good start in the prelims, but overcame it by qualifying for the finals,” Coach Rob Johansen said of the 100-meter dash. “She was probably a little disappointed in her time, but weather conditions have a lot to do with that. It was pretty cool most of the day on Saturday making it a little tougher to lower her time.”

She finished the season as the school record holder in the 100 and 200.

“It will be exciting to see how she improves next year,” Johansen said.

Carson Fehlhafer struggled in the discus, throwing two completely out of the sector, the coach said.

“That can really get into your head, and I give him lots of credit for not letting that rattle him,” he said. “He came back to have a better throw on his last attempt in the finals to get fifth place” with a throw of 148-4.

The senior also competed in the shot put, finishing at 49-5.25 but did not make the finals.

In his first trip to state, Jayde Gumaer threw 135-10, his second farthest throw of the season.

Jake Bargen continued to improve in the 300-meter hurdles, running a personal-best 43.27 seconds.

“This was a new event for him just last year, and he did really well this season,” Johansen said.

Samara Ruether, a junior, and Gracen Fehlhafer, a senior, both improved their personal bests in the pole vault, going 9-6 and 9-0, respectively.

“That was really good on their first trip to state,” Johansen said.

Molly Prochaska ran better than she was seeded in the 800-meter run at 2:33.98.

“It was a good run at state when she had to start in the back and navigate through more people than she would in the season,” Johansen said.
