Hackbart makes donation to Backpack Program

Dr. Daryl Hackbart knew fundraising efforts for the Seward Kiwanis Club's annual Backpack Program was down because the typical Empty Soup Bowl Luncheon fundraiser was canceled because of safety concerns.

So he wanted to do what he could to help.

Hackbart Chiropractic offered free adjustments with free-will donations last week. The first person gave a $200 check, which boded well for the initiative. That adjustment offer continues through the end of the month for new patients with a free-will donation.

As of Nov. 20, Hackbart Chiropractic's contribution has totaled $3,200.

The Seward Kiwanis Club Backpack Program serves 67 families across all three Seward Public Schools buildings, as well as St. John's Lutheran School, the Headstart Program and Our Redeemer Lutheran School in Staplehurst. The program has worked in conjunction with Lincoln Food Bank for the last 15 years. The typical cost averages around $18,000.

“That's been a great program for Seward Kiwanis Club over that time and it's become part of our identity,” Kiwanis Club President Jonathan Jank said, “which is perfect for the mission that we have, serving the children of the world.”

Volunteers put food in backpacks on Fridays to support families over the weekend. Kiwanis members have largely volunteered but members of the public are welcome to donate their time as well. Donations can be sent through Seward Kiwanis Foundation at Jones Bank.
