Little Leaps of Faith to celebrate 25 years

The Milford United Methodist Church will recognize and celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Little Leaps Child Care Faith Development Center serving the community on Sunday, Oct. 5.

Audit cites need for process, documentation for SCSO spending

Auditors hired by the Seward County Board of Commissioners reported no evidence of fraud or obvious mismanagement in the Seward County Sheriff’s Office expenditure of drug interdiction funds, but said weak control and documentation processes “elevate compliance and reputational risk” in the department.
While the audit identified “serious compliance risks,” the auditors said in their Sept. 22 presentation to the commissioners that the department could still “restore compliance, safeguard resources and rebuild community trust.”

SPS begins review of future projects

It’s time to start updating the facilities at Seward Public Schools. Patrons received a survey two to three weeks ago, and public information meetings are planned around the district.
The next open houses at which school representatives will be available for questions are Monday, Oct. 6, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Staplehurst Community Center, Wednesday, Oct. 8, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Garland Legion Club and Monday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Seward High.

TODAY - Homecoming

It's the final day of Homecoming Week at Seward High. The annual pep rally will be at 1 p.m. at the high school, followed by the parade at 2 p.m. The parade will go from the high school, down Pinewood to the elementary and back. Tonight's football game against Grand Island Northwest kicks off at 7 p.m. at Concordia University's Bulldog Stadium.

TODAY - Retirement party

A retirement party for Seward County Clerk Sherry Schweitzer will be Friday, Oct. 3, from 1 – 5 p.m. at the Seward County Courthouse in the third floor law library. The public is invited.

TODAY - RSVP deadline

Medicare Updates and Open Enrollment, with Medicare Specialist Eric Hansen, regional volunteer coordinator with Nebraska SHIP, will be at noon Friday, Oct. 10, in the third level meeting room at Memorial Hospital. RSVP required by Friday, Oct. 3, by calling (402) 646-4707 or register online at www.mhcs.us.

TOMORROW - Farmers market

The Seward Farmers Market is on the courthouse square. Homegrown and homemade goods will be available Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon and Wednesdays from 5 – 7 p.m.

SUNDAY - Soup lunch

Ridgewood Rehabilitation and Care Center in Seward will host its fall soup lunch Sunday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A free-will donation will be accepted.

SUNDAY - Car show set

The Seward County Historical Society Museum will host its annual car show Sunday, Oct. 5. Registration runs from 9 a.m. to noon, with the show open from noon to 4 p.m. Trains will run, and food will be available.

SUNDAY - Immigration discussion

Rebecca Gonzales will discuss immigration, past and present, from her experiences both as a first-generation daughter of immigrants and as a long time Nebraska rural resident on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at the Seward Memorial Library. She will look at the immigrant experience, who immigrants are and Nebraska’s immigrant history through her own family’s experiences.

THROUGH MONDAY - Clothing collection

Coats, hats, scarves, gloves, jeans, sweatshirts, warm clothing, hygiene items – tampons, deodorant, shampoo, etc. – and non-perishable snacks are being collected through Oct. 6 for Project Connect Lincoln that will be Oct. 8 in Lincoln for people who are homeless or near homeless. Concordia University students will volunteer and give out the items collected. There will be boxes to drop items off at the Seward Memorial Library and at the entrance of Weller Hall at Concordia. Centennial and Malcolm competed at the Raymond Central Invite at Branched Oak Lake yesterday. The Centennial girls, led by Marley Olson in fifth, placed fifth; Malcolm did not have a team score. The Centennial boys, with Carter Fritz in fourth, finished eighth; Malcolm did not have a team score.
