A proposal to merge the Department of Environment and Energy and the Department of Natural Resources drew opposition yesterday. LB317, introduced by Sen. Tom Brandt of Plymouth for the governor, was heard in committee, and critics said it could distract from the focus on shoring the state's water supply.
A Crete man was charged with child enticement by electronic communication, enticement by electronic device and attempted visual depiction of sexually explicit material after an investigation into an incident in Milford in November. Eh Kaw Kaw Taw, 38, went to a residence in Milford to meet a person he thought was a 15-year-old boy and was met by three juveniles. All three teens were charged with terroristic threats, first-degree false imprisonment and assault causing bodily injury.
After losing the doubles point in heartbreaking fashion, the Bulldogs showed grit, fighting back in two separate singles matches to snatch the road victory (5-2) from Mount Marty. No. 2 Nick Velders and No. 5 Grady Works were instrumental in the rally as the seniors clinched the winning point over the Lancers. The two teams claimed this as a non-conference match and will play for the conference standings later in the season.

The Seward Memorial Library will host “Just for Fun Fridays” every Friday from 1:30 – 3 p.m. This program is designed for adults. First and third Fridays of the month, card games; second and fourth Fridays, Bingo; fifth Friday – patrons’ choice between cards or Bingo.
The Utica Senior Center will host a Valentine exchange and party Friday, Feb. 14, at 12:15 p.m.
The Seward VFW Post will offer a breakfast buffet the third Sunday of each month, serving from 8 to 11 a.m. Donations help support all of the group’s projects. The public is welcome.
The Seward Rotary Club’s free movie on Monday, Feb. 17, at 1 p.m. will feature the new “Garfield The Movie!” Special drawings for door prizes are planned. There is no charge for anyone to attend the movie. The Rotary is asking all attending to donate one or two toiletry items to be given to the area pantries and/or Food Net.
Visitation for Lola Schildt will be today, Feb. 14, from 3-6:30 p.m. at Volzke Funeral Home in Seward. Family and friends will gather from 5-6:30 p.m. The funeral service will be tomorrow, Feb. 15, at 10:30 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church (Middle Creek), rural Seward. Committal will follow in the church cemetery.
