Eagles runners-up at conference track

The Southern Nebraska Conference track meet has traditionally not been a day for the Milford teams to shine.

In the past 50 years, Coach Cody Gregory said, the Eagles have been first or second just seven times.

This year, the Eagles did something unprecedented – both the boys’ and girls’ teams brought home team hardware. Both team finished in the runner-up position.

Both teams needed their 4x400-meter relays to win, and neither was able to do so.

“It was an incredible finish to a fantastic day of competition,” Gregory said. “The quintessential ending to any track meet, even though Milford came up just short of a championship.”

Milford’s distance runners put everyone on notice at the start of the running events, Gregory said.

The MHS 4x800-meter relay team of Kylie Jakub, Delaney Carraher, Kaitlin Kontor and Lilly Kontor won with a school record time of 10:05.37. The time leads Class C, the coach said.

The boys’ team of Isaac Roth, Avery Carter, Kaleb Eickhoff and Hudson Mullet set their own school record of 8:26.59 to place third.

Milford runners swept the top places in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200-meter runs. Lilly Kenning took care of the girls’ races, finishing in times of 2:23.5, 5:42.84 and 12:19.97, respectively. Her 800 time is a new school record.

For the boys, Hudson Mullet won the 800 in 2:10.44. Avery Carter took care of the other two races with times of 4:54.1 and 10:39.37, a new personal best at No. 8 on the school chart.

Sarah Spahr jumped 5-4 to win the high jump for the MHS girls, and Camille Stauffer won the discus with a throw of 120-4.

Addi Mowinkel added third place in the shot put.

For the boys, Caden Nelson brought home a pair of medals, winning second in the 110-meter hurdles in 16.27 and third in the 300-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relay team of Connor Adams, Carter, Isaac Roth and Mullet won third.

Additional top 10 marks came from Ellison Piening in the triple jump, Tanya Miller in the 400, Delaney Carraher in the 800 and Avery Carter in the 3200

The Eagles are next in action Thursday, May 4, at Sutton in a final tuneup before districts, which are Thursday, May 11, at Thayer Central.
