The Milford girls’ basketball team got off to a good start Dec. 4, beating Fillmore Central 53-48.

Coach Phil Stauffer was pleased with the team’s defensive play, especially early in the game, which led to easy transition points. MHS rebounded well, too, and those two areas showed the effort the Eagles gave, he said.

On the other hand, Milford committed too many turnovers and unforced errors.

“We will need to work on making better decisions with our passes, but we did do a great job of sharing the basketball and finding open teammates,” he said.

He was disappointed to see a 15-point lead shrink to just five by the end of the game.

As the game progressed, Milford got better at handling the defensive pressure from the Panthers, too, he said.

“Definitely have things to work on next week but lot of good things to build on. A little rust to shake off after not playing much over the summer, it’s always easier to do that after a win,” Stauffer said.

Hannah Kepler led the Eagles with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double double and grabbed four steals. Makena Stutzman made four three-pointers in the game – three of them in the third quarter – and finished with 12 points. Taylor Roth was big on the boards with 13 rebounds.

Milford (1-0) is scheduled to host Fairbury Friday, Dec. 11, starting at 6 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 12, the Eagles are slated to visit Lincoln Lutheran with tip-off at 3:45 p.m.
