Eagle boys win two to open season

The first week of the 2022-23 boys’ basketball season went well for the Milford boys and their new coach Mitchell Marvin.

The Eagles hosted Fillmore Central Dec. 2 and defeated the Panthers 59-53. On Dec. 3, MHS headed to Raymond Central and topped the Mustangs 44-31.

Marvin said the coaching staff has preached physical play early this season and encouraged the Eagles to be defensive-minded. MHS was able to do that in both games, he said.

He was pleased to see the team do a good job against FCHS after struggling against York in the jamboree game.

Nelson Girmus had a big night against the Panthers, recording a double double with 27 points and 12 rebounds. Chase Nitzsche added 13 points.

Marvin said Girmus has been willing to do what’s needed while Cayden Baker is recovering from an injury. Baker will be the post, but Girmus filled the position well, the coach said.

“He has a diverse skillset,” he said, adding that Girmus was tasked with guarding Fillmore Central’s best offense threat and held him to 11 points, six of which were free throws.

The game against Raymond Central also went well, with Girmus notching another double double (19 points and 10 rebounds). Marvin said playing back-to-back games is always tough, but the Eagles did a great job getting off to a good start. MHS led 13-2 after the first quarter.

In addition to Girmus, Nitzsche scored 16.

Marvin said the Eagles are buying into the team’s philosophy of being a defensive team.

“We will rely on that to keep us in games,” he said.

The goal for the offense is to play fast with Nitzsche and Reice Stutzman managing the offense. Senior Alec Shook brings a lot of energy to the court, as well, which Marvin likes to see.

The Eagles will host Fairbury Friday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. and be at Lincoln Lutehran Saturday, Dec. 10, at 5:30 p.m.

Fairbury beat Fillmore Central by one Dec. 3, Marvin said. Lincoln Lutheran is a quick team and runs a fast offense. They are also 2-0.
