Donna Mae (Horak) Meredith, 91, passed away on Sept. 26, 2024, in Topeka, Kansas.
She was born in 1933 in rural Colfax County, and grew up on a farm outside of Schuyler. She graduated from Schuyler Central High School and worked as a secretary for welfare offices at the Colfax County Courthouse and later in Lincoln, where she met and married George Meredith in 1957. They made their home in the communities of Hershey, Papillion (where they had two sons), and Bassett before settling in Milford, where their children grew up.
Donna owned and operated a successful donut shop in Milford. Later, they moved to Prairie Village, Kansas; Houston, Texas; and finally, Wichita, Kansas, for George’s work. An excellent cook, Donna enjoyed preparing home-cooked food for family gatherings all her life, and also worked as a baker for various companies in Kansas City and Houston. When she retired, she was assistant manager of a hotel in Wichita. Since 2018, Donna has lived in Topeka, where she played cards daily with friends at Presbyterian Manor.
Donna is survived by her children, Brad (Sandy) and Brian (Rebecca); grandson, David; sister, Linda Varejcka (Jim); niece, Carmen (Kelle); and nephew, Jason Varejcka; and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George R. Meredith; parents, Adolph and Anna Horak; and aunts and uncles.
