District keeps eye on virus numbers

COVID-19 case numbers continue to be on the radar for staff at Seward Public Schools.

Dr. Josh Fields, district superintendent, said Jan. 17 they watch the numbers carefully, especially when it comes to staff.

“If we have staff, that’s a big component,” he said.

If too many staff members and students are unable to attend, he would consider closing school.

The discussion was part of the Jan. 10 school board meeting.

In a related matter, Fields said the district is working with Blue Valley Community Action on mental health and wellness.

The district has implemented the Safe to Help Hotline (1-833-980-7233) for anyone needing crisis help and those who are concerned about friends.

In another matter, the board reviewed the summer projects including new heating, ventilation and air conditioning at the high school using ESSR funds to help pay for; paint and carpet at the elementary school; and refinishing the floor in the main gym at the high school.

The gym hasn’t been done since it was built 20 years ago, Fields said.

The board also approved the 2022-23 calendar with a start date of Aug. 17 and elected officers.
