Commissioners decide to split liaison duties

The Seward County Board of Commissioners discussed filling commissioner Mike Mundhenke’s office liaisons until a replacement can be found.

Mundhenke passed away Oct. 9. It was decided Ken Schmeiding would fill his Seward County Extension role, Bob Vrbka would fill his Public Transit and Veteran Service role and John Culver would fill his Housing Authority, 911 and Four Corners liaisons roles.

Also during the meeting, the board:

• accepted county treasurer Bob Dahms' first quarter report.

• approved district court fees of $5,015.81.

• received a demonstration from Eagle View Pictometry’s Ryan Poots on county-wide services offered by the company but no action was taken.

• approved a three-year to the Nebraska Intergovernmental Risk Management Association (NIRMA) for insurance for county employees.

• heard from Dan Forbes of TC Energy about replacing a 72-inch culvert along the intersection of Yankee Hill and 280th Road as it is rusted but needed for the Keystone Pipeline XL project. Highway Superintendent Terry Wicht said there were already plans to replace it and Forbes said his company will pay the expenses. It was approved by the board.

Forbes also said the same area of roads will need to be stabilized. Such action would be paid for by Transcanada, as the county has a road haul agreement with them. Transcanada would also pay for the $2 million project and it is set to be completed next month or the spring.

The next Seward County Board of Commissioners meeting will be Nov. 10 at 9 a.m. on the third floor of the courthouse. The Nov. 3 meeting was canceled in observance of Election Day.
