City adds new job to help with install

A Utilities Locator position will be added to the City of Seward staff to assist with the demands of installing a new fiber internet network in Seward. The city council approved the Utilities Locator position at its April 5 meeting.

Allo Communications will begin installing fiber across Seward this month.

The goal of hiring a locator is to alleviate pressure on other city departments, as the fiber installation will require a high number of locates above what those departments already do. The person will be responsible for locating water, wastewater and storm sewer utility lines, as well as some electrical lines if qualified.

“Electrical locates are more technical,” City Administrator Greg Butcher said.

The position will be a one- to two-year job, with the possibility of becoming another department at some point.

Butcher said the city budget should be able to absorb the cost of the new position with no amendments.
