Centennial wrestling had a busy first week of the season, competing in the Freeman Duals Dec. 1 and at the Bob Arehart Invitational in Friend Dec. 3.

The Broncos finished second in the duals, with their only loss coming to Wilber-Clatonia by two points.

“We gave Wilber a good run,” Coach Phil Payne said.

Two first-time wrestlers had good nights, with Xavier Ettwein and Elijah Utter taking the mats for the first time. Both are seniors, and both scored points for CHS, despite wrestling up weight classes.

“We are still trying to get to our weights, and we have some guys hurt,” Payne said.

The Broncos finished third in the team standings in Friend on Saturday, with Kasten Ruether taking the top spot at 106 pounds.

Jarrett Dodson (145) and Breckin Schoepf (160 finished second, with Garrison Schernikau (126), Cyrus Songster (170) and Paul Fehlhafer (285) third.

Payne was pleased to see the Broncos wrestle well at the tournament, with younger wrestlers picking up quality wins against tough opponents.

Up next for the Broncos is the Seward County triangular Thursday, Dec. 8, at Centennial. Matches start at 6 p.m. The event was moved to Friday, Dec. 9, because of weather.

Centennial will host its junior high tournament Saturday, so the varsity will not compete.
