Centennial splits two to start

The Centennial boys’ basketball team finally took the court Dec. 10 at Sandy Creek and won its season opener 50-19. The Broncos came back to action Dec. 12 at Tri County and lost to the Trojans 53-39.

“It was nice to get playing,” Coach Cam Scholl said.

The Broncos played well on defense against Sandy Creek, holding the Cougars to seven first-half points. Scholl said the defense was able to take away Sandy Creek’s inside game.

“They started to play better in the third quarter, but we wore them down,” he said. “It was a good first game. It was good to get our nose bloodied.”

Jake Bargen led the CHS offense with 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Cooper Gierhan scored 15.

Things didn’t go as well against Tri County.

“We did some not smart things,” Scholl said. “Our defense didn’t play especially well, and we got no stops in big moments.”

The Trojans were able to seal the win with fourth-quarter free throws.

Gierhan led CHS with 15 points.

Centennial (2-1) also defeated Fairbury 52-38 Dec. 15. CHS was to host Milford Friday, Dec. 18, at 7:30 p.m. and travel to Superior Saturday, Dec. 19.

“We’ll keep grinding and getting better,” Scholl said.
